Symptoms We Diagnose

These symptoms describe what a homeowner may notice — they are not a diagnosis. A single symptom can have several different causes, which is why we diagnose before recommending parts or refrigerant.

Not turning on
Not cooling
Not heating
Weak airflow
Room not reaching setpoint
Indoor unit dripping water
Outdoor unit not operating
Error code displayed
Unusual noise
Icing / frost
Turns on/off unexpectedly
One zone works, another does not
Remote / control not responding
Odor during operation

Why Diagnosis Comes First

Mini-split symptoms can come from airflow, drainage, electrical, controls, sensors, refrigeration, installation conditions, or equipment failure. Because so many different problems can produce the same symptom, we diagnose the actual cause before replacing parts or adding refrigerant.

We do not guess a part, assume low refrigerant, or recommend a recharge before evaluating the system. Diagnosis separates the real cause from the symptom — and that is what protects you from paying for the wrong repair.

How a Mini Split Is Built

A ductless mini split is a system of connected components — not a single box. Understanding the architecture helps explain why the symptom source is not always obvious.

Indoor Unit / Head

Mounts in the conditioned space and contains the coil, blower, filter, and controls.

Outdoor Unit

Houses the compressor, outdoor coil, fan, and inverter/control electronics.

Refrigerant Line Set

Connects the indoor and outdoor units and carries refrigerant between them.

Control / Communication Wiring

Carries signals between the indoor and outdoor equipment.

Condensate Drain

Removes condensation from the indoor unit during operation.

Sensors & Remote

Reads conditions and accepts operating commands from the controller.

Multi-zone systems may have multiple indoor units connected to one outdoor system depending on equipment design. We do not provide DIY internal-equipment instructions.

Indoor Unit Concerns

Possible indoor-unit issue categories may involve filter restriction, coil condition, the blower/fan, a sensor, the control board, the drain, airflow, communication, or icing. We do not state which is present without diagnosis — and we do not give homeowner teardown instructions.

Outdoor Unit Concerns

Possible outdoor-unit issue categories may involve power, the fan, inverter/control electronics, the compressor, a sensor, communication, the refrigeration system, or outdoor coil condition. We keep this high-level — no DIY capacitor, board, compressor, or electrical testing instructions.

Airflow, Filters & Coils

Reduced airflow can have more than one cause — we do not automatically diagnose a dirty filter, and cleaning does not fix every airflow problem.

Airflow Causes

Reduced airflow may involve a dirty filter, coil condition, the indoor fan/blower, an obstruction, icing, or an equipment/control issue. Diagnosis identifies the actual cause.

Filters

Many ductless systems use washable or reusable filters, but filter design and maintenance requirements vary by equipment. Follow the equipment manufacturer's maintenance guidance for the specific filter and system — we do not claim every filter must be cleaned every 30 days.

Coil Cleaning

Dirty indoor or outdoor coils may affect operation, but coil cleaning is not always the repair — scope depends on equipment condition. We do not provide DIY chemical-cleaning instructions.

Water Leak & Drainage

A water leak may come from a drain restriction, the drain connection, a condensate pump where present, unit pitch or installation conditions, icing, drain routing, or other equipment conditions. We do not state that a water leak always means a clogged drain — and we do not give DIY disassembly instructions.

Indoor Air Quality

Condensate Pumps

Some installations may use a condensate pump. We do not claim every mini split has one. Where a pump is present, its operation, power, drainage, and application are evaluated as part of the diagnosis.

Electrical & Power Concerns

Electrical considerations may include the breaker/disconnect, electrical supply, wiring, control power, boards/electronics, and equipment protection. This is professional work — we do not provide DIY live-voltage testing, board jumping, bypasses, capacitor testing, breaker modifications, or disconnect work.

If you notice a burning smell, smoke, electrical arcing, visibly damaged wiring, or repeated breaker trips, stop operating the equipment and seek professional service.

Communication & Controls

Mini-split equipment may use communication wiring between the indoor and outdoor units. Communication faults can have multiple causes. We do not publish universal terminal mapping, wire-by-wire instructions, or claim a communication error always means a bad board. Diagnosis-first language applies.

Error Codes

An error code is useful diagnostic information, but its meaning must be interpreted using the correct manufacturer/model documentation and confirmed against the system's actual condition. Error codes vary by manufacturer and model — we do not create a universal mini-split error-code table, and we do not state that any single code always means the same thing.

Refrigerant & Leak Evaluation

A properly operating sealed refrigerant system should not require routine refrigerant top-off. If refrigerant charge is low, the cause should be evaluated rather than simply adding refrigerant and assuming the issue is resolved.

Refrigerant pressure and charge are diagnostic information, not a substitute for finding the underlying problem. We do not tell customers "your mini split probably just needs Freon," and we do not use "Freon" generically as a diagnosis.

Refrigerant types: mini-split systems may use different refrigerants depending on equipment and age. We do not imply every mini split uses the same refrigerant, and we do not publish refrigerant pricing.

Leak evaluation: potential leak locations vary by system. Professional scope may include leak evaluation, pressure testing where appropriate, identifying connection/component concerns, repair, evacuation, and charging according to equipment requirements. Procedural detail stays high-level.

Flare connections: mini-split systems often use flare connections depending on equipment design. We do not tell homeowners how much to torque, how to remake a flare, how to tighten a leaking flare, or how to pressure test with nitrogen. Connection condition is one possible area evaluated when a refrigerant leak is suspected.

Evacuation / vacuum: if a repair involves opening the sealed system, proper evacuation and charging procedures may be required depending on the repair. We do not provide DIY micron-target instructions.

Diagnostic Fee vs Leak / Pressure Testing

Our standard diagnostic/service visit is $75. A refrigerant-system leak or pressure test, a refrigerant charge, and repair labor are separate scopes that may follow diagnosis. We do not publish a separate mini-split pressure-test price here, and we do not confuse the diagnostic fee with leak testing, refrigerant, or repair labor. If repair is approved, the $75 diagnostic fee is applied toward the approved repair according to current company policy.

Frozen or Iced Mini Split

Icing or frost may involve airflow restriction, coil condition, a fan issue, a sensor/control issue, a refrigerant-system concern, or operating/environmental conditions. We do not diagnose solely from icing, and we do not tell homeowners to chip or remove ice.

Heating Mode & Defrost

If the unit does not heat properly, possible categories may involve settings/mode, outdoor conditions, defrost operation, sensors, controls, the refrigerant system, the outdoor unit, or an equipment fault. We do not assume poor heating means low refrigerant. Some frost/defrost behavior may be normal depending on conditions and equipment — we do not state that any outdoor frost automatically indicates a failure.

Heat Pump Repair

Multi-Zone Systems

One zone not working does not automatically mean the entire outdoor system has failed. Possible issues may involve an individual indoor unit, controls, communication, branch/distribution architecture where applicable, refrigerant/system operation, or shared outdoor equipment. We do not publish model-specific branching rules.

Noise

Possible noises may come from a fan, vibration, expansion/contraction, a drain or pump where present, compressor/outdoor operation, or loose/damaged components. We do not tell homeowners to open equipment to locate the sound.

Odors

Odors can have different causes — filter/coil condition, moisture, drain condition, environmental/source issues, or an electrical/equipment problem. Cleaning does not fix every odor. For a burning or electrical odor, stop operation and seek professional service.

Inverter Technology

Many modern ductless systems use inverter-driven technology. We do not claim every mini split does, and we do not turn this page into an inverter electronics manual. No DIY board diagnostics.

Compressor

We do not state compressor failure from noise alone, an error code alone, or pressure alone. Compressor concerns require system-level diagnosis, and we do not provide compressor electrical testing instructions.

Remote / Controller

Possible issues may involve batteries, settings, mode, a sensor, the controller, the receiver, or equipment communication. We do not reduce every control problem to "change the remote batteries," and we do not make unverified app/Wi-Fi claims.

Google Nest Pro & Ductless

Traditional Google Nest thermostats are not universally compatible with ductless mini-split equipment. Google Nest Pro status does not mean every ductless system can use a Nest thermostat. Compatibility depends on the specific equipment and controls.

Service Scope & Brands

Service availability can depend on the equipment, model, parts availability, and repair scope. We do not publish a multi-brand repair list or claim all makes and models.

Parts Availability

Parts availability depends on the equipment manufacturer, model, age, and current supply. We do not guarantee every part is available or promise universal same-day repair.

Installation-Related Problems

Existing mini-split issues may sometimes be influenced by placement, line-set installation, drain routing, wiring, equipment sizing/application, or commissioning. We do not automatically blame the original installer — installation conditions may be part of the evaluation when they are relevant to the symptom.

Repair vs Replacement

We weigh equipment age, current condition, repair history, parts availability, repair cost vs investment, reliability, comfort, efficiency, refrigerant/system condition, number of zones, and your goals — no hard age cutoff. Cleaning is not a repair, and cleaning does not fix failed electronics, a sensor fault, a compressor issue, an electrical problem, a refrigerant leak, drain damage, or a communication fault.

Factors We Consider

  • Equipment age
  • Current condition
  • Repair history
  • Parts availability
  • Repair cost vs investment
  • Reliability
  • Comfort
  • Efficiency
  • Refrigerant / system condition
  • Number of zones
  • Customer goals

Maintenance vs Repair

Repair addresses an active malfunction; maintenance is preventive service. Our current seasonal tune-up is $75, but we do not automatically claim that standard $75 tune-up scope applies identically to every ductless maintenance visit unless current business policy supports it. Some complaints may be related to cleaning or maintenance — but not every mini split problem just needs cleaning.

HVAC Maintenance

Financing

Financing may be available for qualifying HVAC projects; eligibility and available options depend on the financing provider. We do not imply every repair qualifies.

Warranty

Warranty coverage depends on the manufacturer, equipment, registration status, age, terms, and repair circumstances. We do not publish a universal mini-split warranty claim.
