Understanding HVAC Equipment
Education only — not a price list. Learn how HVAC equipment works together, compare YORK® comfort technology, and understand efficiency, tonnage, refrigerant, and installation. Then request a properly sized, AHRI-matched system.
Understanding Your HVAC System
A complete HVAC system can contain several pieces of equipment working together. Here's what each major piece does — in simple homeowner language.
Outdoor Air Conditioner
Provides cooling and works with the indoor coil and furnace/air handler.
Heat Pump
Provides both cooling and heating through the refrigeration system.
Gas Furnace
Provides gas heating and also moves conditioned air through the home.
Air Handler
Moves conditioned air and is commonly paired with heat-pump systems.
Evaporator Coil
The indoor heat-transfer component used with the outdoor equipment.
Packaged HVAC System
Combines major heating and cooling components into one outdoor cabinet.
Thermostat / Controls
Controls system operation and comfort settings.
Choose Your Comfort Technology
YORK® equipment is available across single-stage, two-stage, and variable-speed inverter options. The right level depends on your home, comfort goals, and budget.
Standard Comfort
Single-stage equipment operates at one primary output level when there is a call for heating or cooling. It is a straightforward comfort option when the application does not require staged or variable-capacity operation.
Enhanced Comfort
Two-stage equipment can operate at a lower stage during moderate demand and increase output when the home needs more heating or cooling. That can reduce temperature swings compared with simple on/off operation.
Premium Comfort
Variable-capacity equipment can ramp through a range of output rather than operating only fully on or fully off, supporting more consistent comfort and lower-speed operation when full capacity is not required.
No unsupported utility-savings percentages. Actual energy use depends on the home, installation, climate, utility rates, thermostat settings, and usage.

Indoor Coils
An evaporator coil is the indoor heat-transfer component used with the outdoor equipment. Coils come in different orientations, cabinet widths, and capacities — they are not each a separate product to choose from. The coil must be matched to the outdoor unit and the indoor equipment.
Vertical Coils
Upright indoor coils for upflow or downflow applications.
Horizontal Coils
Side-discharge indoor coils for attic or crawlspace installations.
Upflow / Downflow
Coils oriented for air moving upward or downward through the system.
Horizontal Plenum Coils
Coils designed for horizontal plenum connections where applicable.
Cabinet Widths
Different cabinet widths to fit different install spaces.
Capacities
Different coil capacities matched to the outdoor equipment.
R-410A Coils & R-454B Systems
Important Compatibility Note
Do not assume an R-410A coil is automatically compatible with a new R-454B system. The final indoor/outdoor equipment match must be verified.
- Refrigerant compatibility verified
- TXV configuration verified
- Refrigerant detection / safety verified
- Orientation and complete equipment match verified
How Your Equipment Is Matched
Homeowners do not need to select model numbers themselves. Islas Heating & Cooling determines the appropriate equipment based on the home's needs and installation conditions.
Why the Complete System Match Matters
Efficiency ratings can depend on the complete combination of outdoor unit, indoor coil, and furnace/air handler. The catalog contains AHRI-certified equipment combinations — one efficiency number cannot be automatically assigned to every possible combination.
Final capacity, efficiency rating and AHRI certification depend on the complete matched system selected for the home.
What Does Tonnage Mean?
HVAC "tonnage" is a measure of cooling capacity — not the physical weight of the equipment. One ton of cooling roughly equals the amount of heat needed to melt one ton of ice over 24 hours. A higher tonnage number means more cooling capacity.
Larger tonnage is not automatically better. Do not choose tonnage based only on square footage. An oversized system can short cycle and dehumidify poorly; an undersized one can struggle to keep up. System sizing should consider the property and installation conditions.
HVAC Efficiency Terms
Simple explanations of the efficiency terms you'll see when comparing equipment — no engineering formulas.
SEER2
Cooling efficiency — used to compare cooling equipment over a season.
EER2
Cooling efficiency under specified test conditions.
HSPF2
Heat-pump heating efficiency over a season.
AFUE
Gas furnace heating-efficiency measurement.
Understanding Today's R-454B HVAC Systems
Newer equipment families in the catalog are designed for R-454B refrigerant. Properly matched equipment and the required refrigerant safety components are important when a system uses R-454B.
A Refrigerant Detection System (RDS) is designed to help detect refrigerant in the conditioned space and support safe operation where applicable. RDS requirements depend on the equipment and installation — they are part of properly matched, code-appropriate R-454B systems.
Installation Configurations
Different homes, closets, attics, garages, and existing duct configurations may require different equipment orientations. Not every model supports every orientation.
Upflow
Air discharges upward — common in closets or basements with appropriate clearance.
Downflow
Air discharges downward — common when equipment sits above the conditioned space.
Horizontal
Air moves sideways — common in attics or crawlspaces with limited height.
Vertical
Upright configuration for closets or utility areas with vertical clearance.
Side-Discharge
Compact outdoor discharge (e.g., the YORK® HH8) for tight installation footprints.
Packaged Unit
All major components in one outdoor cabinet — rooftop or ground-mounted where appropriate.
Equipment Warranty & Registration
YORK® uses the term "limited warranty." Warranty terms vary by equipment family and model — there is no single universal warranty statement across all YORK® equipment. Registration requirements may affect warranty terms, so manufacturer registration is reviewed as part of your project.
Review the limited-warranty documentation for the specific equipment included in your proposal. All limited warranties are subject to the terms, conditions, and exclusions in the applicable warranty statement.
