One System for Heating and Cooling

A heat pump can provide both heating and cooling by moving heat between the indoor and outdoor environments through a refrigeration cycle. Rather than creating heat the way a traditional furnace does, it transfers heat — into the home in heating mode and out of the home in cooling mode.

Because one technology serves both modes, a heat-pump installation involves correct system selection, application, backup/auxiliary-heat planning, and control configuration. That's what this page is about — selecting and installing heat-pump equipment, not repairing an existing system.

Heat-Pump Operation, Simply

  • Heating mode — moves heat indoors
  • Cooling mode — moves heat outdoors
  • Reversing operation between modes
  • Thermostat & controls select the mode

Exact operation varies by heat-pump type and equipment — this is a homeowner-level overview.

When a Heat Pump May Be Worth Considering

A heat pump isn't automatically the best fit for every home. It may be worth considering when:

You want heating and cooling from one system
You're replacing separate AC and furnace equipment
You're adding comfort to a garage, ADU, or addition
You're interested in YORK® heat-pump equipment
You're upgrading from an older, less efficient system
You want to simplify to a single outdoor unit

Suitability depends on the property, existing equipment, system configuration, heating/cooling needs, controls, airflow, your goals, and the selected equipment. We help you decide — we don't assume a heat pump fits every home.

Heat Pump vs Traditional AC + Furnace

No universal winner — a balanced comparison.

Heat Pump

  • Provides heating and cooling from one system
  • Uses heat-pump-specific controls and thermostat configuration
  • May use auxiliary or backup heat depending on the system
  • Application and configuration matter — not a fit for every property

Traditional AC + Furnace

  • Separate cooling and furnace heat
  • Different operating characteristics
  • May remain the appropriate choice depending on the property
  • Still a common fit for many Inland Empire homes

Proper Heat-Pump Sizing

Heat-pump sizing should not be based on the existing tonnage, a neighbor's system, or a "bigger is better" assumption. An oversized heat pump short-cycles; an undersized one can't keep up. We size based on the factors that actually affect the home.

Heat-Pump Configurations

High-level possibilities — not every configuration is appropriate for every property.

Ducted Heat-Pump System

A heat pump paired with your home's existing or new ductwork to deliver heating and cooling through central airflow. We evaluate your ductwork and airflow before recommending this approach.

Heat Pump with Air Handler

A heat pump paired with an indoor air handler for conditioned-air distribution. Equipment pairing and airflow are matched to the home.

Heat-Pump Package System

A single self-contained unit providing heat-pump heating and cooling, where applicable to the property and existing setup.

Dual-Fuel Configuration

A heat pump paired with furnace heat that can switch between sources depending on conditions. Only where it fits the project and selected equipment — not a universal recommendation.

Auxiliary / Backup Heat

Auxiliary or backup heat may be part of certain heat-pump configurations. Its operation depends on the equipment, the system design, the conditions, and the thermostat/control setup. Auxiliary heat isn't automatically bad or inefficient — it's part of how many heat-pump systems are designed to operate. We don't publish unsupported operating-cost comparisons.

Dual-Fuel Considerations

A dual-fuel system can pair a heat pump with furnace heat, depending on the project and selected equipment. The system can switch between heat-pump heat and furnace heat depending on conditions. Dual fuel is one possible configuration — we don't install it on every project, and it doesn't always save money.

Heat Pump Thermostat & Control Setup

Heat-pump installations require correct controls. A misconfigured thermostat can cause comfort problems, auxiliary-heat issues, or mode-switching problems. Islas Heating & Cooling is a Google Nest Pro.

  • Compatibility
  • Wiring and C-wire / Nest Power Connector
  • O/B configuration
  • Heat-pump mode
  • Auxiliary heat and emergency heat
  • Dual fuel where applicable
  • Equipment staging
  • Startup and testing

Why Controls Matter on a Heat Pump

A heat pump is particularly sensitive to thermostat configuration. Correct setup of O/B, auxiliary heat, emergency heat, and staging determines whether the system runs the way it should in both modes. We configure it as part of the installation — not as an afterthought.

YORK® Heat Pump Options

Islas Heating & Cooling is a YORK® Dealer. We can help you explore YORK® heat-pump options as part of a replacement or new installation — including heat-pump configurations, heating and cooling applications, equipment matching, comfort features, and efficiency options without guaranteed savings.

We review current YORK® documentation during your consultation — we don't publish specs or ratings that can change.

Project-Based Selection

Actual equipment selection depends on the project, application, current equipment availability, equipment matching, and your goals — reviewed during your consultation rather than chosen from a fixed catalog.

YORK® is a registered trademark of Johnson Controls International plc and its affiliated companies. Used under license.

Ductwork & Airflow

Existing ductwork and airflow may need evaluation when relevant to a ducted heat-pump installation. We don't automatically recommend duct replacement — we evaluate first. If ductwork service is needed, it's a separate scope.

Heat Pump Repair vs Installation

Existing Heat Pump Malfunctioning?

If your current heat pump has an active problem — not heating, not cooling, defrost issues, auxiliary-heat problems — our Heat Pump Repair page is the right path. Diagnostic service is $75.

Intentionally Planning New Equipment?

If you're selecting and installing a new heat pump — replacement, new installation, or a proposal — stay here and request a heat-pump estimate. Complete-system replacement evaluations are free when scheduled as a replacement evaluation.

Not Committed to Heat-Pump Technology?

If you're weighing several replacement technologies — split systems, heat pumps, package systems, or other options — our HVAC Replacement page compares complete-system replacement options so you can choose without being pushed toward one technology.

HVAC Replacement

Free Replacement Estimates

Complete HVAC system replacement estimates are free when the visit is specifically for gathering replacement information — evaluating your needs, taking pictures, and preparing a replacement proposal. That's different from a diagnostic visit, which addresses an existing system problem. Tell us which type of visit you need when you schedule.

Financing Options for Your HVAC Investment

Financing is available through Hearth to help manage your heat-pump investment. We don't publish APR, monthly payments, 0% terms, credit requirements, or guaranteed approval here — they vary. Ask about financing when you schedule your consultation.

Incentives & Rebates

Heat-pump incentive, rebate, and tax-credit programs can change and may depend on equipment and eligibility. Ask about currently available programs when planning your project — we don't publish amounts that can go stale.

Warranty

Warranty coverage depends on the selected equipment and the project. We provide warranty details in your proposal — we don't publish universal 10-year, lifetime-compressor, or labor-warranty claims here.

Efficiency

Depending on the existing system, the selected heat pump, the installation, and the operating conditions, newer equipment may offer improved efficiency. We don't promise guaranteed savings or a payback period.

Installation Timing

Timing depends on equipment availability, project scope, site conditions, applicable permits, and scheduling. We don't promise one-day, next-day, or same-day installation.

Permits

Permit requirements depend on the project and the local jurisdiction. Applicable requirements can be addressed as part of the installation project — we don't publish invented fees or timelines.

Startup & Testing

After installation we check heating operation, cooling operation, thermostat and control function, auxiliary heat where applicable, airflow, and overall system operation. We don't claim an exact commissioning checklist beyond what's verified.
